Artist Martina Hoogland Ivanow joins curator Grace Johnston for a conversation on Shadow Works, Living the Dream—her latest exhibition and newly released book—as they discuss the themes, creative process, and ideas that shape her work in this engaging talk.
For her second exhibition with the gallery, Martina presents selected images from her new book and edit, Shadow Works, Living the Dream, alongside overexposed photographic material in a site-specific installation. In today’s image-saturated world, photography is often taken for granted, its poetic essence overlooked. This exhibition, also titled Shadow Works, Living the Dream, features framed analog works and a video piece exploring the balance and imbalance of everyday existence.
Grace Johnston is a writer, editor, and curator. She is a co-founder of Cento, a curatorial project working with contemporary artists, musicians, and artists’ estates, and of 20 Albert Road, a shared exhibition space in Glasgow, where she has organized shows by Rhett Leinster, Brianna Leatherbury, Nora Kapfer, Tonio Kröner, Yuki Okumura and Sofia Duchovny, among others. She has written and edited books on art, design, and fashion, with recent volumes on the fashion designer Kris Van Assche (Lannoo, 2023); the heritage of Byredo (Rizzoli, 2023); and the typography of M/M (Paris) (Thames & Hudson, 2022). She studied sculpture at the Glasgow School of Art and holds a Master of Letters in Curatorial Practice (Contemporary Art). She has consulted for artists, designers, galleries, and luxury brands. Grace lives and works in Paris.
