Description

When We See Us presents Black joy, sensuality, emancipation and all-round lives through portraiture — what happens when we pay closer attention to how clothing is presented in these portraits and the story they tell? Join brand strategist and communicator Georgètte Dwomoh-Appiah for Dressed in Power: an invitation to look at WWSU through a fashion enthusiast's lens. This guided tour of 6-8 paintings explores the visual codes not seen by the untrained eye, and the dress choices made not necessarily for stylistic reasons but as a reflection of culture to those who know. This walkthrough explores how the stories of these garments have travelled over time and how they are expressed today by fashion professionals across the African diaspora. When you travel far away from home, the thread that draws you back is the very thing you pull on to tell your own stories, to make your mark, to refine your identity. Clothes become a subtle political tool, allowing you to reclaim a life moved you away from, and to build a new one far from home. Georgètte Dwomoh-Appiah is a brand strategist, creative and communications consultant with over a decade of experience across fashion, art and international development. As the founder of Rouge Palette and The Art of African Fashion, she works at the intersection of culture, strategy, and storytelling, connecting brands to their untapped audiences. She consults for The World Bank on communications across the Africa region as well as being responsible for Southnord Artfest marketing and communications. Born in Ghana, educated in Sweden, and currently based in Toronto, Georgètte brings a wealth of expertise in marketing communications, public relations, and visual design. With a deep love for art and culture, and a desire to support and promote African brands, her work is dedicated to helping native and diasporic Africans succeed in a global marketplace through the use of digital technologies.
