Description

We will approach traditional semenawa from both a practical and theoretical perspective, exploring its iconic patterns, structural principles, and the philosophy that underlies this style. Rather than treating seme as a fixed definition or a closed concept, this workshop aims to unpack it from multiple angles: technical, psychological, emotional, and relational. We will examine how these elements contribute to the experience of seme, not only as an external action, but as an internal state and an interpersonal dynamic. A central focus of the workshop is the relationship between intention and effect: how technical choices shape emotional responses, and how seme emerges in the space between rigger and model rather than belonging exclusively to one role. Instead of offering a single interpretation, the workshop is designed to give participants tools, references, and embodied experiences that allow them to reflect, question, and ultimately form their own understanding of seme. Observation, discussion, and hands-on practice will be combined to encourage critical thinking and personal reflection, highlighting individual sensibilities and backgrounds. The goal is not to replicate a style, but to understand its cornerstones, and from there, consciously decide how (and if) to carry them forward into one's own practice. There will be a one-hour lunch break. Bring your own food or visit nearby restaurants. The TK We will analyze a stemless gote, understanding its structure and historical development. The differences with an original Japanese TK will be described both from a technical and philosophical point of view. Basic Patterns Some iconic patterns will be taught and put in use. Both floorwork and suspensions will be part of the schedule. Each basic pattern will be used to teach a skill that can be carried over and used in several other ties. Variations Depending on the level of participants, some basic ties will be variated and transformed into new shapes. Variations are didactically skill-oriented, and participants will improve rope and body handling while experimenting with new ties. --- Instruktörer Kirigami Italian rope performer and educator.
