Description
KICK-STARTER LECTURE + WORKSHOP (eng) REBEL ART: Political Art, Ethics, and Capitalism Hosted by Dylan Cawthorne
This kick-starter lecture and workshop is designed to help creatives navigate the complex terrain of political art, ethics, and the capitalist, market-driven systems we all operate within.
How can artists make a living without compromising their ethics? Should you tone down the political nature of your work to become more commercially viable? What are your ethical boundaries, and how can you actively maintain them? And, in practical terms, what kinds of political art create the greatest impact?
The session begins with a lecture by activist, artist, academic, engineer, and applied ethicist Dylan Cawthorne (PhD). Dylan’s talk combines theoretical perspectives with practical tools for addressing real-world dilemmas faced by artists today.
Following the lecture, the event opens into a collaborative workshop. Participants will work in small groups of 1–3 people to map out their own political positions, ethical considerations, and the economic realities of their specific art form or industry. With facilitation from Dylan and other experienced cultural practitioners, participants will receive feedback on how to strengthen the political impact of their work, fund their practice in ethically responsible ways, and better align their values with their working lives.
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
The workshop is open to anyone curious about art, society, and the political landscape of today. You do not need to be an artist to participate, students, journalists, communicators, and others with an interest in how creative practices relate to contemporary political questions are very welcome.
All art forms and professional backgrounds are invited. The workshop is relevant for emerging and up-and-coming voices as well as more experienced participants. Curiosity and a willingness to engage in dialogue are all that is required.
