These musicians are among the absolute finest jazz performers in Denmark, and we are proud to present them as part of this project. Jakob Buchanan – flugelhorn Kati Brien – alto saxophone, clarinet Michael Bladt – flute, tenor saxophone, clarinet Cesar Joaniquet – tenor saxophone, clarinet, bass clarinet Mads Bærentzen – piano Frederik Sakham – bass Karl Seyer-Hansen – drums and percussion Song & Wind is Jakob Buchanan’s fourth major orchestral work, originally written for Aarhus Jazz Orchestra with Carsten Seyer-Hansen conducting. In Songs in the Air, Concert Clemens lends voice to Buchanan’s elegiac melodies, wrapped in and complemented by Art Ensemble Aarhus’ warm woodwind timbres and transparent rhythm section — all enriched by Jakob Buchanan’s deeply personal and colorful flugelhorn playing. Buchanan creates a truly unique musical encounter between an award-winning classical vocal ensemble and a jazz ensemble specially assembled for the occasion. "Concert Clemens sings of longing, doubt, and loss. Of pain, of time and eternity. Of hope and faith. I’ve been inspired by the South African poet Iain S. Thomas and his writings, as well as by the thoughts and feelings that arise in my mind — as a husband and father reflecting on a life that has grown long. Iain S. Thomas’ short existential poems give voice to many of the things happening in my inner world, in the world I live in right now. Nature, however, is completely independent of the human mind — it simply exists. The music was written where I live, in a landscape of soil and fields on Mols, just outside Aarhus, shaped by the gentle hills and the strong wind from the surrounding sea. It also came to life at our summer house in Kornhult, Sweden — surrounded by the darkness of the pine forest, moss, and birdsong. In short: the small human being and the vast Mother Nature were my starting point in creating Song & Wind." — Jakob Buchanan, 2025
