Specialist or Generalist: Is that the Question?

We often hear colleagues and clients reflecting on this paradox: there are too many generalists being brought in to do specialist work and too many specialists being promoted to managerial positions without having the generalist character traits associated with leadership. But it’s not that simple: we also see deep knowledge work benefiting from the fresh perspectives and objectivity of non-specialists and great leadership growing out of detailed domain expertise. Almost everyone we speak to about this topic has a different opinion, so that is why we decided it would make a great Ramskov Open, where we will explore the topic together with our community.  For this event we will be joined by Kenneth Mikkelsen – a global expert in leadership and author of a bestselling book on generalism and specialism - who will shepherd the group dialogue by weaving together his deep expertise on topic with audience interactions and reflections around a case. The intention of the event is not to have the audience align on a single truth, but for all of us to grow wiser around the topic. We extend the invitation, as always, to curious people in the life science community to join us in our exploration where we aim to open our minds to the complexities of our work.
