Description
On this walking tour historian Christian Holm Donatzky talks about the history of Copenhagen in the period 1600-1800 – a royal city with kings deciding much of the development. Copenhagen becomes an important trade centre. The political aim is a trade surplus. Scandinavia is at war. The city is ravaged by large epidemics and fires. The period is marked by large building projects of the royals. The cultural life of Copenhagen is inspired by France and Paris.
From Højbro Plads the tour passes Copenhagen's best preserved renaissance house at Amagertorv. We walk by Gråbrødre Torv and along Købmagergade. We pass important 17th century buildings like Regensen, Rundetårn and Rosenborg. We walk along Gothersgade to Kongens Nytorv, the cultural centre of Copenhagen. The tour continues to Frederiksstaden - Frederik's Town. This magnificent district was built in the 1750's and named after the absolute monarch, Frederik V. We end the tour at Amalienborg, the royal palace and the heart of Frederik's town.
Meeting place: Højbro Plads at the equestrian statue of Bishop Absalon. The tour is in English.
